Obituary

James Russell Smith, affectionately known to everyone as “Jim” or “Jimbo,” passed away on March 17, 2026, at St. Thomas West in Nashville, Tennessee. Born on June 22, 1955, in Indiana to the late Randall and Clara Smith Davis, Jim was a man defined by his craftsmanship and his love for the simple pleasures of life. Early in his career, he was a renowned sheetrock hanger, earning a reputation as the best drywall guy around. Later in life, he dedicated 17 years of hard work to Kroger.

Outside of work, Jim was a true outdoorsman and a talented handyman. In his younger years, he spent every weekend fishing on his boat, and he always found peace while camping. He was a passionate gardener who took great pride in canning the food he grew himself. A natural "tinkerer," Jim loved to spend his spare time building things and working on cars.

Jim is survived by his lifelong friend of 54 years, Linda Smith Aldridge of Brighton, TN; his brother-in-law, Bracie Dunnagan; his stepson, Joseph Story of Woodbury, TN; and his stepdaughter, Annie Paul of Murfreesboro, TN. He also leaves behind his step-granddaughter, Lexus Manson; his step-grandson, Dillan Paul; and his nephew, Jamie Dunnagan. He will be remembered for his skilled hands, his steady work ethic, and his devotion to the people and hobbies he loved.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by a sister, Debbie Dunnagan.

Private services will be held at a later date.
