James C. Smith departed this life on Saturday, August 8, 2015, at the age of 82 years and 9 days. He was born in Holladay, Tennessee the son of the late Birdell Woods Phelps. On May 28, 1955, he was united in marriage to Elaine L. Eckman, who survives.
He was a former resident of Palos Hills, Illinois, Wayne County, Tennessee, and resided in Hardin County since 1998 and retired from Brown Shoe Company. James was a member of the Old Town Full Gospel Church in Savannah, Tennessee. He hosted the television show, "I Saw the Light", on TV18 in Adamsville, and loved to talk about the Lord and prayed for everyone in need.
James is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elaine L. Smith of Savannah, Tennessee; son, Vincent W. Smith of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; daughter, Pat Wheat Cooksey of Savannah, Tennessee; grandchildren, Whitney L. Wheat and Morgan Cooksey; sisters, Jean (Ken) Love of Holladay, Tennessee, Jessica (Dave) Winchell of Bridgeview, Illinois, Janet Russell of Goodman, Missouri, Joan (Randy) Raleigh of Gaines, Michigan, Joyce Marie (David) Jordan of Paris, Tennessee, and Reba Nell (Johnny) Patterson of Camden, Tennessee.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna M. Dobis and a sister, Joyce M. Peebles.
