James Talmadge (Tam) Young, age 86, passed away on June 21, 2025, in Adamsville, Tennessee. He was born on March 17, 1939, in Savannah, Tennessee. He lived a fulfilling life with the love of his family.
Tam graduated from Central High School in Savannah, where he laid the foundations for his future endeavors. He was united in marriage to Martha Hardin on October 22, 1966.
Tam had a long and successful career as a Tow Boat Captain, proudly serving in this role for 37 years. His commitment to his work was evident in the respect he earned from his peers in the industry.
Beyond his career, Tam served in the Navy, demonstrating his dedication to his country. He was also deeply involved in the world of coon hunting and was a member of the H&M Coon Hunting Club. Tam served on the executive committee for the PKC (Professional Kennel Club) for numerous years and was honored to be inducted into the PKC Hall of Fame. His remarkable talent led him to become the 2004 PKC National Champion and he was a member of the 1994 World Champion Team.
Tam had a great love for dogs, specifically the Black and Tan Coon Hound, which he was well-known for. He was a breeder of the Tennessee Wheeler Black & Tan, contributing significantly to the breed and sharing his passion with others.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Martha Young of Adamsville, TN; a daughter, Tammy Blakely and husband Mike; a son, Clay Young and wife Channin; a brother, Raymond Young; three grandchildren: Zachary Blakely and wife Abigail; Caitlin Blakely and companion Alex Peden; and Dylan Gattis and wife Annie; and a great-grandson, Bellamy, to be born in July.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James Wesley and Mattie Belle White Young, and two sisters, Matta Vaye Young and Gail Thompson.
Tam will be remembered for his kind heart, dedication to his work, and his contributions to the coon hunting community. His life, filled with achievements and friendships, has left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
