James (Jimmy/George) was born in Savannah to Roy D. and Mary D. Wolfe Welch on June 30, 1937. He graduated from Savannah Central in 1955 and joined the Navy the same year. Jimmy was a Fire Control Tech Petty Officer 2nd class and was honorably discharged in 1958.
He married Hilda Pearl Hassell on May 23, 1958 and they had four children. Son, Jimmy Wayne Welch and wife Carol of Memphis; Daughter, Patricia Carol Welch Hindmon and husband Donnie of Adamsville; Son, Roy Andrew Welch and wife Amy of Adamsville; Daughter, Diana Kay Welch Ray of Selmer.
They also have 9 grandchildren, James Stricklin, Allison McCoy, Dustin Ray, Katie Welch, Nicolas Welch, Mary Nutt, Anna Hindmon, Krista Ray, and Brian Welch, along with 7 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild, Dustin Cody Ray.
He retired from Tennessee River Pulp and Paper Mill on January 1, 2000. He attended Bethlehem Methodist Church in Adamsville and enjoyed farming and gospel music. He also loved watching westerns, Nascar, and wrestling. His hobbies were keeping up with his high school classmates and traveling.
James Robert Welch departed this life on September 3, 2020 in Savannah, Tennessee at the age of 83 years, 2 months, and 4 days.
