Obituary

Janice Mathis Stooksberry, beloved mother, devoted wife, and cherished community member, passed away on April 28, 2026, at the age of 78. She was born on April 1, 1948, in Mumford, TN, the daughter of the late Fred and Ruby Lomax Mathis.

Janice’s life was marked by her unwavering commitment to family, faith, and service. She was united in marriage to Robert Stooksberry on November 17, 1984 and he preceded her in death on November 30, 2006.

A faithful member of the Waynesboro Church of Christ, Janice’s dedication extended beyond her personal devotion. After a heartfelt career spanning 21 years as a Special Education Teacher’s Aide at Wayne County Technology Center, she embraced her retirement by continuing to serve her community as the church secretary. Her warm spirit and tireless work touched countless lives.

Janice also enriched her social world as an active member of the Ladies in Pink society, the Red Hat society, and proudly served as president of Delta Kappa Gamma, where her leadership inspired many.

Janice found simple joy in the beauty of nature, often spending time enjoying the gentle melodies of wind chimes and the lively visits of birds at her feeders. Her peaceful presence and generous spirit enriched the lives of all who knew her.

Her legacy is one of kindness, strength, and enduring love—a beautiful life that will be lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege to know her.

She is survived by her son, Wayne Gipson (Bridget); daughters, Gwen Wilbanks (Chris), and Kim Sherrill (Ricky); brother, Fred Allen Mathis Jr. (Frances); grandchildren, Chassidy Todd (Jonathan), Cessaley Davis (Cameron), Nicholas Sherrill; Greg Sherrill (Christy), Jake Wilbanks (Mallory); Chandler Gipson (Addison), and Shelby Marks (Triston); great grandchildren, Jaxon Todd, Maverick Todd, Creed Davis, Courtlyn Davis, Ruby Sherrill, Caroline Sherrill, Wyatt Sherrill, Henry Sherrill, Carson Sherrill, Jodie Wilbanks, and Margo Wilbanks; and nephew, Brian Mathis.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 1, 2026 from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm service time at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Waynesboro, TN.
