Jason "J.J." Hurt, a man who never met a stranger and lived life with high energy, passed away at the age of 39. Born on November 30, 1986, in Jackson, Tennessee, to Jody Holder Hurt and the late Carlton Hurt, J.J. On March 27, 2026, J.J. officially wed the love of his life, Christy Taylor, though their hearts had been joined for over a decade. While he took great pride in his work with Morgan Contracting, J.J.’s true "prize possessions" weren't things, they were his children. To him, there was no higher honor or favorite title than simply being called "Daddy."
J.J. was a man who simply could not stay still. From a young age, he was a tinkerer with a mischievous streak, famously cutting every wire in his mother’s car just to see how it worked and once successfully jumpstarted a vehicle using a lawnmower. His family often joked that as a child, they had to tie him to a tree just to get him to sit for a moment. This restless spirit served him well as a legendary "wheeler and dealer"—it was often said he could sell ice to an Eskimo. Whether he was fishing with his oldest daughter, Taylor, hanging out with his friends, or spending time with his faithful black Mountain Kerr, Aspell, J.J. was happiest outdoors and surrounded by those he loved.
Though J.J. was open about the hard times and difficult choices in his past, his family celebrates the profound transformation he underwent after finding God. He became a man of prayer, grounding his life in his faith and his deep love for his family. He was the undisputed life of the party, a man without a "serious bone in his body" who wanted nothing more than to make people laugh and lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He brought light to every room he entered and leaves behind a legacy of laughter and a testament to the power of change.
J.J. is survived by his wife, Christy Hurt of Selmer; his children, Taylor Ann Hurt, Tucker Joe Hurt, and Tatum Grace Hurt, all of Selmer; his mother, Jody Holder Hurt of Ramer; his brothers, Payton Stanfield and wife Crimson of Finger, Josh Hurt of Paris, TN, and Daniel Stanfield and wife Devin of Michie; and his sisters, Jodi Aaron of Alabama and Keri Hanna of Michie. He also leaves behind his sisters-in-law, Regina Wiles and Amanda Hollaman and husband Shawn; and his brother-in-law, Adam McClain, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Carlton Hurt; his stepfather, Kevin Stanfield; and his grandmothers, JoAnn McMahan Gibson and Genell Holder.
