Jerry Neal Ashe was born on April 13, 1942, in McNairy County, Tennessee, the son of the late James Acey Ashe and Cora Lee Hockaday Ashe. A simple blind date would become a lifelong love story when he met Marjorie Sue Irvin; the two were united in marriage on December 21, 1968, sharing many devoted years together.
Jerry Neal was a hardworking man who dedicated much of his life to his trade. He retired as a Construction Maintenance Worker from Aqua Glass Corporation in Adamsville, Tennessee. Over the years, he also spent time building homes and working at Brown Shoe. A proud graduate of Selmer High School, he carried with him a strong work ethic and quiet determination throughout his life. He was a member of Union Grove United Methodist Church.
He found joy in the simple pleasures—tending his garden, nurturing his orchard, and watching the fruits of his labor grow. Whether bird hunting, fishing, or settling in to watch his favorite westerns, Jerry Neal appreciated life at a steady, unhurried pace. Friday night fish plates, a chew of tobacco, a bowl of ice cream, and homemade popcorn were among his favorite comforts.
But above all, his greatest joy came from his family. Becoming a Papaw, and later a great-grandfather, was the role he cherished most. Known lovingly as “Pepper Ashe,” he held a special place in the hearts of those who called him that name.
Jerry Neal departed this life on March 21, 2026, at the age of 83 years, 11 months, and 8 days. He is survived by his daughters, Belinda Ashe King and husband Jason of Selmer, Tennessee, and Amanda Ashe Shelton and husband Clay of Selmer, Tennessee; his grandchildren, Brent King and wife Elizabeth and Allie Grace Shelton; his great-granddaughter, Elise Evelyn “Evie” King, with a great-grandson expected soon; his sister-in-law, Doris Ashe; and a host of nieces and nephews who were near and dear to him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marjorie; his brothers, Estil Ashe and wife Mildred, James Eathel Ashe and wife Ersel, Robert L. Ashe, and Charles Ashe and wife Martha Bess.
Services were held on March 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Selmer, Tennessee, with Joey Johnson officiating. Burial followed at Union Grove Community Cemetery.
Shackelford Funeral Directors of Selmer was honored to serve the family of Jerry Neal Ashe.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorials be made to Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo, Mississippi, or to the Union Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund.
