It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jerry Wayne “Chigger” Martin, age 80, who passed away on March 7, 2025. Jerry was a man who brought kindness and warmth to so many people. He was a loving husband, a devoted father, a doting Gan-Gan, and a proud great-Gan-Gan. His presence in our lives was a gift, and his legacy of love will continue to inspire us all.
He was born in the loving community of Collinwood, TN, on May 17, 1944, the son of the late Taylor Jr. and Sarah Frances Daniel Martin.
On September 29, 1962, he took the hand of his beloved wife, Betty Jean Morris, in marriage, beginning a partnership filled with love and companionship. Jerry’s 62-year marriage to his wife, Betty Jean, was truly special. Together, they built a life full of joy, laughter, and unfailing support. As a father, Jerry was a guiding light for his kids, always offering wisdom, support, and encouragement, and usually a leather belt when things weren’t done the way he thought they should be. His dedication to his family was clear in everything he did, and his children treasure the countless memories they shared.
Jerry attended the Collinwood Methodist Church, his faith was a guiding light in his life, reflecting his kind spirit and commitment to his community.
In the heart of Collinwood, Jerry, alongside his father, proudly operated the Martin 66 mechanic service station, where they became known for their hard work and dedication. Later, he transitioned to TVA, where he continued to excel as a machinist. His strong work ethic and the camaraderie he shared with his colleagues were a testament to his character and the values he held dear.
Beyond his professional life, Jerry found joy in the simple pleasures – hunting and fishing were treasures of his outdoor spirit, while the thrill of NASCAR racing captured his attention. However, nothing brought him more happiness than the time he spent with his family, especially his beloved grandchildren, whose laughter and love filled his heart.
Jerry’s grandchildren had a special place in his heart, especially his one and only granddaughter. Though he tried to hide the wide smile he had for Bailey, we all knew she was his “little gal”. He took pride in their achievements and loved spending time with them. His five great-grandsons brought him endless joy, and he loved watching them grow, play, and explore the world around them. Jerry’s legacy of love and kindness will surely live on through them.
Jerry leaves behind a legacy of hard work, unwavering love, and an enduring faith that will be cherished by all who knew him. He will be profoundly missed by friends, family, and the community he served with such dedication.
Jerry’s warmth and generosity extended beyond his family to his friends, co-workers, and neighbors. He was a man who valued connections and always took the time to help or share a kind word. His friends remember him as someone who could always be counted on for support and friendship. His co-workers admired his dedication and hard work, and his neighbors appreciated his friendly demeanor and willingness to help.
Jerry “Chigger” Martin lived a full life. His kindness, compassion, and unwavering devotion to his family and friends made him a beloved figure in the lives of many.
