Dr. Jerry Carlton Jones was born on June 7, 1962 to Dorothy Helen Johnson Jones and Jimmy Jones. He attended school in Jacks Creek and later graduated from Chester County High School. He was the grandson of Nora and WA Tart.
Despite his disability, Jerry entered Freed Hardeman University and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work. He further preserved and obtained a Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling in 1985 from the University of Memphis.
He then determined to pursue a Ph.D and lived in New York serving as Coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities for Columbia University. Upon leaving New York, his journey continued as he began a ten (10) year endeavor to earn his Doctorate in Special Education. Jerry put his life experience to work as he worked for the Tennessee Division of Rehabilitation Services serving others with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. He also devoted time to tutoring special needs children. Jerry took the time to enjoy life. He became a certified scuba diver, he parasailed and he often said – he had been on ten (10) or more cruises. He was a Memphis Tigers basketball fan, an Alabama football fan and he went to see the Dallas Cowboys on several occasions. Jerry said the “the thing he was most proud of is the Jerry Jones award”. This award at Freed Hardeman has been awarded at “Makin Music” since 1984. He leaves many friends and cousins who loved and appreciated his sense of humor and the manner in which he lived his life despite such great physical challenges. Jerry is with his mother and daddy today who he loved and adored.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Friday, January 5, 2018 at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Henderson – Crook Avenue. Burial will follow in Johnson Crossroads Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Crook Avenue beginning at 12:00 Noon Friday until service time at 3:00 PM Friday.
