Jewel McGee Thompson, 84, passed into her heavenly home on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, TN surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Thompson was born January 24, 1932 to the late John McGee, Jr., and Pearl Dixon McGee in the Double Branches community of southern Wayne County, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by brothers Frank and Loyd McGee and sister, Prebble McGee Harvey. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Dixie McGee Canby of Johnstown, Pa.
Mrs. Thompson was married to William Edd Thompson from July 3rd, 1946 until his death on March 4, 1999. Five children, all who survive, were born to this union, Brenda Thompson Turnbo, Waynesboro, TN, Eddie W. Thompson (Margaret), Collinwood, TN, Daniel A. Thompson (Susan), Wilmington, NC, Phyllis Thompson Parkes (Russ), Columbia, TN and Marcus W. Thompson (Patti), Athens, AL; Eight grandchildren, Susan McClanahan, David Turnbo, Madonna Thompson, Shelaine Powell, Haley Moorehead, Lee Thompson, Brent Baltzer and Terah Beth Varga and fourteen great-grandchildren survive. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Steven W. Turnbo.
Mrs. Thompson was a member of Green River Baptist Church in Waynesboro, TN. Her occupation, prior to retirement, was that of retail cashier. She learned to play the piano at an early age, having been raised in a musical family. She would marry into a musical family as well and enjoyed many evenings entertaining friends and family along with her husband, a noted guitar player. Her love for music was well known among all who knew her. She was an avid flower grower and gardener. In addition, she enjoyed her role as a volunteer at the Natchez Trace Welcome Center in Collinwood, TN. Above all, she was a loving wife and mother who always put the needs of her family above her own. She will sorely be missed.
Visitation will be this Sunday, May 22, 2016 from 5-8 pm and Monday, May 23, 2016 from 8 am until service time at Shackelford Funeral Home, Waynesboro, TN. Funeral services begin at 1 pm, Monday, at the funeral home with David B. Miller officiating with burial in Shields Cemetery, Waynesboro, TN, Shackelford Funeral Directors, Wayne County, directing.
