JOE BURTON
Henderson, TN: Joe Tinker Burton, Sr. age 91 passed away November 5, 2019 at his daughter’s home in Henderson.
He was born April 7, 1928 at Bunches Chapel, TN and grew up at Perryville, the son of the late Aubrey Audobon ‘Doc’ Burton and Ruth Aulda Tinker Burton. He graduated from Parsons High School in 1947. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1950 and served at Norfolk, VA and Narragansett, Rhode Island. While in the Navy he was an outstanding pitcher on the U.S. Navy baseball team. He married Betty Barnes in 1952. After his Naval Services he attended U.T. Martin on the G.I. Bill and played on the baseball team while in college.
They made their home in Jackson and later Henderson while he worked at Consolidated Aluminum in Jackson retiring in 1990. He did substitute teaching in Chester County after his retirement.
Joe was an avid scratch golfer and was club champion one year at Woodland Hills. He loved to water ski, continuing to ski at the age of 78.
He was very active in the church and served as a deacon at Grace Baptist Church.
He spent his married life devoted to Betty Jean Burton, and cared faithfully for her until her death.
“You know we are lucky in life if you know a handful of really good people and he was one of the best, and we were lucky enough to call him daddy, grandfather, brother and friend”.
Mr. Burton is survived by a daughter, Elaine Burton Heinze (Darryl Cox) of Henderson, two sons; Brad Burton and wife Sherry of Beech Bluff and Joe T. Burton, Jr. and wife Anita of Henderson; nine grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; a brother, James H. ‘Hooty’ Burton of Savannah and two wonderful caregivers, Cynthia McKenzie and Thomas Rash.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Betty Jean Burton in 2016, two sisters, Betty Burton Laster and Nancy Burton Ivy and a baby brother, A.A. Burton, Jr.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday, at Grace Baptist Church with Glenn Harris and Marcus Kelley officiating. Burial will follow with Naval Military Honors at 2:00 PM Friday in Houston Cemetery at Parsons, TN.
The family will receive friends at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Crook Avenue 4:00 PM Thursday until 8:00 PM Thursday and Friday from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM.
