Later in life John attended Crump Vocational-Technical School, where he earned his certification to become a licensed electrician.

With a diverse career that spanned various industries, John was known in the community as the owner/operator of Outback Bar-B-Que in Bethel Springs, TN, where he served "the best bar-b-que around" for five years. His skills extended beyond the kitchen; he worked as a licensed electrician, was employed as a factory worker, painted cars, rented houses, managed Sonic Drive-ins in Savannah and Adamsville, and even delivered newspapers for the Jackson Sun. John was a man of many talents and could build anything. He was a hard worker and always dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the task at hand.John had a passion for fishing and cooking, often sharing his culinary creations with family and friends. He enjoyed gathering around the table for board games and dominos, creating cherished memories with his loved ones. Most of all, he treasured spending time with his grandchildren—Makayla Knipp, Trista Knipp, Xander Cummings, Kellan Cummings, and Kingston Cummings—delighting in their laughter and presence. John was Baptist in his beliefs.

In addition to his five grandchildren, John is survived by three daughters: Tiffany Silfee and husband Dustin, Sabrina Cummings, and Bonda Cummings, all of Selmer, TN; his sister, Anna McDaniel of Bethel Springs, TN; his brothers, James "Jim" Smith of Selmer, TN and Rickey Smith and wife Carolyn of Bolivar, TN; as well as Sabrina and Bonda’s mother, Wanda Cummings.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Betty Ann Brown Smith and Johnny Ray Cummings; his step-father (dad), Connie L. Smith; his sister, Teresa Gail Wardlow; his brothers, Timothy Smith and Tommy Cummings; his niece, Jessica Wardlow; and Tiffany's mother, Linda Anderson.
