Memphis, TN: John Allen Ross, Sr. age 83 passed away January 27, 2011 at the V.A. Medical Center in Memphis.
He was born and reared in Henderson County the son of the late John Roy and Verdie Mae Webb Ross. He graduated high school and attended Union University in Jackson. He married Mary Catherine Hefley. They made their home in Henderson, Louisville, KY, Jackson, TN, Tullahoma, TN, Ludowici, GA, Jacksonville, FL, Nashville, TN, Huntsville, AL, back to Jacksonville and then back to Henderson and then to Memphis.
He was serving as a police officer in Louisville, KY when he was shot six times and was disabled from that shooting. He was an evangelist and preached in Tullahoma where he had a radio program and then preached in churches in Georgia. He also preached revivals while living in Huntsville, AL He had made his home in Memphis since 1984 to be near the V.A. Medical Center.
He had a lot of roots in Henderson with the Ross and Webb families.
He loved reading the Bible and loved to hunt and fish.
He served in the Navy during World War II.
He is survived by three sons, Johnny Ross, Jr., Jacksonville, FL, Joe Ross of Memphis, TN and Jerry Ross of Woodstock, GA., 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Catherine Hefley Ross, two daughters, Pat Ross and Paula Jean Ross in 1952 from injuries during the tornado and a son, Jeffrey Lynn Ross in 2005, three brothers, James Ross, Jerry Ben Ross and Billy Wayne Ross and a sister, Ruby Moody.
