John Curtiss Sloan, age 80, 1811 W. Lakeview Dr. Apt. D-11, Johnson City, died Saturday, March 6, 2010 at John M. Reed Nursing Home, Limestone, following a lengthy illness.



Mr. Sloan was a native of McLemoresville, TN and had been a resident of Johnson City for the past thirty years.



He was the son of the late C.F. and Ruth Hailey Sloan.



Mr. Sloan was a graduate of Castle Heights Military Academy, Columbia, TN and the F.B.I. Academy.



He began his career in law enforcement in 1950 with the Tennessee Highway Patrol where he served until becoming an agent with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in 1967 where he retired as a Special Agent in 1989. Following his retirement, Mr. Sloan was employed with SSS Bonding Company.



He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and was the founder of the F.O.P. Lodge #37 in Shiloh, TN, the Johnson City Loyal Order of the Moose, the Johnson City Masonic Lodge #486 F&AM, the Tennessee Highway Patrol Retired Officers Association and numerous other law enforcement organizations.



Mr. Sloan was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.



In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, William Sloan and a sister, June Sloan.



Mr. Sloan is survived by his wife, Jeannie Rickman Sloan; one son, Curt Sloan (Jennifer); two daughters, Tanya (Greg Wilkins) and Betty Ruth Poff (Chuck); one sister, Marilyn “Connie” Thomas (Kenneth); five grandchildren, John Curtiss Sloan, III, Staff Orten, Jamie Wilkins, Tyler Driskell and Lacey Wilkins; one great-grandson, Canaan Orten; special friends, Pat Story and Jim Campbell; several nieces and nephews.



The family will receive friends Tuesday March 9, 2010 from 5:00 -7:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of Appalachian Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Savannah, TN with interment following at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.
