Johnny R. Powers

Johnny Powers, beloved husband, father, brother and friend, passed away peacefully one day prior to his beloved loved one's birthday, at his home in Middleton on August 15, 2026 at the age of 79.

Born on  April 16, 1947, in Brownfield, MS, Johnny's early years in Middleton shaped a man who would always care for those around him.  A ready smile and an unquestionable enthusiasm for life's simple pleasures as a proud veteran of the US Army, he served his country with humility and honor, earning the respect of all who knew him.  Upon returning home, Johnny dedicated almost 50 years a career in maintenance starting in the middle of November of 1969 at Thyssen-Krupp, formerly known as Dover Elevator, now known as TKE.  He retired on March 13, 2018, but anyone who knew Johnny, knows he was never really idle.  He could often be found taking on many projects and odd jobs, such as carpentry, using his hands and generous heart to help neighbors, friends and family. He was a devoted member of New Union Baptist Church where his faith guided him and offered him both solace and joy.  Johnny loved everything about spending time in God's creation, whether fishing alongside quiet banks, camping under broad southern skies, hunting at dawn, the outdoors was where he felt most alive.  One of his happiest places was his own back porch, watching hummingbirds dart and pause, listening to his windchimes, chatting with loved ones, or simply soaking in the peace of the moment.   The closest to Johnny cherished his company, the way he was always talking, always working, and always offering a story or a helping hand.  He found delight in western movies, such as "The Outlaw Josie Wales" starring Clint Eastwood and TV westerns such as "Gunsmoke" starring James  Arness at Matt Dillon.

He is survived by a daughter, Me'Chelle Powers and a son,  Rickey Powers of Middleton, a sister, Anita Powers of Middleton.  He was preceded in death by his father, R.L. Powers, his mother, Vernell Fay McBride Powers, his beloved wife, Gail Mayfield Powers, whom he married on November 25, 1970, and she preceded him in death on August 29, 2021, his brother Mark Powers, and his sister, Deleta Scott.  They too formed an inseparable part of Johnny's story.  And now as he joins them in rest, those who remain honor both his life and the family who went before him.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate and remember Johnny's life during visitation as Shackelford Funeral Directors in Bolivar located at 109 Mecklinburg  Drive, Bolivar, Tennessee August 22, 2026, from 4 pm until 9 pm and again on August 23, 2026, from 11 am until 3 pm.  The funeral service will be held at the same location on  Sunday, August 23, 2026, at 3 pm following by interment at Old Enon Cemetery in Middleton, TN.

Johnny Powers lived quietly, but profoundly, leaving behind not  only memories but also the enduring legacy of a life well lived, a legacy engraved in the hearts of all who loved him.  Memorial contributions in his name may be sent to the American Cancer Society (American Cancer Society) or New Union 
Baptist Church.
