Joyce Havens Shelly

Joyce Havens Shelly, age 79, of Middleton passed away Saturday December 31, 2016 at the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.

A native of Teasdale, Mississippi, she was born Tuesday, July 27, 1937, daughter of the late William Daniel and Mamie Glover Havens and lived in various places, residing in Memphis from 1965 until 1970. While in Memphis, she was introduced to J. P. Shelly at Getwell Church of Christ and they married on July 3, 1970, moving to Middleton afterward. She worked as a counselor with Quinco and also worked with the Hardeman County School system for about a year. She received her Bachelor's degree from Freed-Hardeman University in 1980 and her Master's in Education from the University of Memphis in 1982. A natural teacher, she enjoyed getting outside and working and being around nature. She dearly loved her family, but her greatest love was for God and serving Him while here on earth. She was a member of the Middleton Church of Christ where she was very active, teaching a women's bible class for many years and influencing many souls.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Mica Shelly Harris of Middleton; a son, Anthony Shelly of Smyrna; two sisters, Barbara Baker and Brenda Taylor, both of Charleston, MS; four grandchildren, John Paul Shelly, Michael Shelly, Hope Culver and Will Harris; and one great grandchild, Lola Culver. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Chris Shelly in 2012, and two brothers, William "Sonny" Havens and Bobby Havens. Memorial donations in Mrs. Shelly's name may be made to the India Mission Work at Willette Church of Christ, 1586 Willette Road, Red Boiling Springs, TN 37150.
