Karen Newberry

Karen Newberry, age 81, of Memphis, passed from this life on Friday afternoon, August 13th, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis.

She was born in Hardeman County on Saturday, August 3, 1940 to the late James Roy and Jennie Otillion Dorris Morris and grew up on her parents' farm. After graduating from Grand Junction High School in 1958, she moved to Memphis where she lived the remainder of her life. Mrs. Newberry was a 1962 graduate of St. Joseph's School of Nursing.

She retired as a registered surgical nurse having worked at St. Joseph's Hospital and Baptist Memorial Hospital. Certified in CPR and Advanced First Aid, she received her teaching certificate from UT Medical School and also taught as a surgical technologist for the Memphis Board of Education for 25 years.

In her leisure time, Mrs. Newberry enjoyed all kinds of sports, but especially liked watching UT Lady Vols basketball. She was a lover of dogs, horses and admired the magnificence of grizzly bears.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Renee' Newberry of Memphis; and was a beloved aunt to several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Hazel Hazlegrove, Helen Maddox, Geraldine Stroupe and Beatrice Nabors; and three brothers, Menville, Winfred and Glenn Morris.
