Katherine Ford Scott

January 12, 1921 — June 25, 2017

Katherine Ford Scott, age 96, of Selmer, Tennessee died June 25, 2017 at her home.
Visitation will be held 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM on July 1, 2017 and 12 Noon on July 2, 2017, until funeral service at 1:00 PM all held at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Selmer with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery.

She was born January 12, 1921 in the Christmasville Community of Carroll County, Tennessee to the late W. B. Ford and Fannie Bodkin Ford.

Katherine was salutatorian of her graduating class at Christmasville School, she graduated from Trezevant High School in Trezevant, Tennessee, attended University of Tennessee Junior College in Martin, then earned her Bachelor of Science and Masters’ degree at the University of Tennessee of Knoxville in education.

She was assistant home demonstration agent in McNairy County until she began her teaching career of 39 years in home economics at Selmer High School and McNairy Central. She retired from teaching in 1982.

In 1945, she married George W. Scott, who was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for many years in Selmer. Katherine was active in her church and community all through her life, at Court Avenue Cumberland Presbyterian Church and First United Methodist Church in Selmer. She was a member of the Argonaut Book Club, Selmer Music Club, and McNairy County Retired Teachers Association.

Her interest in Education didn’t stop when she retired, she served on the committee responsible for the building of the University of Tennessee Martin Selmer campus and had served on several development committees at UTM. She has also sponsored scholarships for students of McNairy County to attend UTM – Selmer campus. A state of the art technology lecture hall and outdoor pavilion at the Selmer campus was provided through her love and generosity of higher education.

She had a love for travel and had visited every state in the U.S. and many foreign countries with family and several different tour groups.

Katherine was a friend, encourager, and good listener to those she knew. She was loved by many friends, family and wonderful caregivers.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Billie and Edward Ford.
She is survived by a niece, Martha Bobo and husband Tommy of McKenzie, TN; nephews, Edward Ray Ford and wife Jean of McKenzie, TN, James Eldon Thomas and wife Mary of Clarksville, TN; and several great nieces and nephews.
