LARRY THOMAS
Henderson, TN: Larry Warren Thomas age 80, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2024, at the Henderson Health & Rehabilitation Center.
He was born June 30, 1944, in Chester County, the son of the late Warren and Lucressia Moore Thomas. He grew up in Henderson, in the Montezuma Community, and was a 1962 graduate of Chester County High School.
He enlisted in the TN Army National Guard out of high school and served over twenty years in the guard.
He married Madga Newman on December 25, 1964, and they were blessed with three wonderful daughters.
In high school he began working for Casey Funeral Home driving the ambulance and other duties. This led to a lifetime of labor in funeral service.In 1965 he attended, then later graduated from, John A. Gupton College with a degree in Mortuary Science and became a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer. While a student at Gupton he worked for the Hibbett & Hailey Funeral Home in Donelson. During his career he also worked for funeral homes in Centerville, Memphis, Covington, Henderson, and Scotts Hill, where he owned his own funeral home Scotts Hill Funeral Home. He sold funeral home supplies for Frigid Fluids, owned Chester County Memorial Gardens for a time and ended his career as owner of Classic Monuments in Jackson.
He enjoyed having a good time and living life to the fullest and meeting new people. He would meet a stranger and leave with a friend.
He loved his family and spending time with them, traveling and attending birthdays, ballgames and special events.
He loved his grandchildren and adopted grandchildren, and they loved their Paw Paw.
He was a member of the Estes Church of Christ and enjoyed parking cars and greeting folks.
Mr. Thomas is survived by three daughters, Lori Thomas of Henderson, Beth Thomas Cox of Mountain City, TN and Tiffany Thomas Elder (Calvin) of Henderson; a brother, Danny Thomas of Henderson and a brother-in-law, L.W. ”Dub” Burkhead of Henderson; five grandchildren, Nicholas Stewart (Ashley), Westley Stewart (Mikayla), Noah Cox , Taylor Cox and Olivia Osborne (Stephen); six great grandchildren, Braylen Stewart, Blayne Stewart, Tanner Stewart, Drake Stewart, Kalleigh Stewart and John Westley Stewart.
He was preceded in death by, his parents, his sister, Patricia Burkhead, and a sister-in-law, Karen Thomas.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Crook Avenue. Burial will follow at Cave Springs Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Crook Avenue 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday.
