Laverne T. Pettigrew
was born in Michie, Tennessee on March 24, 1923 the son of the late Eber T. and Vestal Rodgers Pettigrew.
On February 14, 1948 he was united in marriage to Anna Desoi, who survives.
Mr. Pettigrew enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, and went to active duty March 1943. He served in World War II and the Korean War. He was first stationed in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia then to Camp Edwards, Massachusetts for Basic Training. Mr. Pettigrew was a member of the 398th Anti-Aircraft Artillery. He was sent to Black Water Bay, England and down the English Channel to Omaha Beachhead on D-Day plus 3. He helped to liberate France. From there he went into Germany. He received Battle Stars for Ardennes, Battle of the Bulge and Battle of the Rhine. He worked Food Service and guarded Post Exchange for the entire theater. Mr. Pettigrew had also been stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky; Camp Pickett (Crew, Virginia); Fort Ord, California; Okinawa; Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1966 and moved back to Tennessee in 1971. In addition to his Military Service, Mr. Pettigrew had worked for Wolfe Sales, Howmet Corporation, C.C.C. (Civil Conservation Corp) in Pikeville and he was a member of the VFW.
Mr. Pettigrew was a true man and a loving father. He was hard working and supported his family. He enjoyed tinkering with cars, farming (corn), and loved dogs, and cats.
Mr. Pettigrew departed this life on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at the age of 86 years, 4 months, 12 days.
In addition to his wife of 61 years, Mr. Pettigrew is survived by a son, Michael Pettigrew of Savannah, Tennessee; 2 daughters, Ursula Patterson of Albertville, Alabama and Monica Hunt of Florence, Alabama; a brother, Al Pettigrew of Adamsville, Tennessee; 2 sisters, Bobbie Patrick of Defuniak Springs, Florida and Jean Morris of Adamsville, Tennessee; 5 grandchildren, Erika Battles, Heather Burton, Eric Pettigrew, Joseph Corrigan, and Anna Corrigan; 5 great-grandchildren, Angelika True, Jason True, Tonjia Burton, Kristin Burton, and Rodney Burton, Jr.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Marie True; 2 brothers, Gerald Pettigrew and James E. Pettigrew; 3 sisters, Vonda Ruth Russell, Catherine Hines, and Lou Greer.
