Leonard C. Stanford, 86, of Midland, GA died Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at St. Francis Hospital, Columbus, GA.
The family will receive friends at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, 31907 on Friday, November 11, 2011 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 12, 2011 at Shackelford Funeral Home, 450 Church Street, Savannah, TN 38372 with visitation from 11:00 a.m. until service time. Interment to follow at Milledgeville Cemetery, Milledgeville, TN.
Leonard was born in Enville, Tennessee on February 22, 1925 to the late Walter L. Stanford and Rettie A. Ramey Stanford. He graduated from Woodruff High School and attended Bradley University in Peoria, IL. He was a member of Midland United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the VFW. Leonard retired as Operations Manager with O'Neill Brothers Transfer and Storage, Peoria, IL. Leonard served his country in the U.S. Army as a Tank Commander under the command of General George S. Patton during World War II. After his retirement Leonard became an avid golfer who achieved his goal of a hole in one, and was an enthusiastic Atlantic Braves fan.
Survivors include the love of his life whom he married on September 9, 1950, Mary Lou Stanfill Stanford, two sons, Gary L. Stanford of Lincoln, IL and Steven C. Stanford (Kris) of Novi, MI; grandchildren, Denise Richards (Dan), Ashley Stanford, Kaitlyn Stanford, and Scott Stanford; great grandchildren, Dominick Richards and Sierra Richards; a brother, W.R. Stanford of Pekin, IL.
Leonard was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucy Stanford Bishop and Audrey Stanford Hughes.
