Mr. Lonnie Staggs, Waynesboro, TN passed away on August 23, 2009 at Wayne County Nursing Home. Mr. Staggs, a native of Wayne County and the oldest of seven children of the late Clarence and Cordelia Gobbell Staggs, was born May 30, 1926. He was married to Freddy June Bromley Staggs on February 8, 1946.
Services will be conducted on Friday, August 28, 2009 at 1 pm at Shackelford Funeral Home Chapel in Waynesboro, TN with Bro. Ray Watkins officiating. Burial will be in the Highland United Methodist Church Cemetery with military rites and Shackelford Funeral Directors of Wayne County directing. Visitation will be Thursday, August 27, 2009 from 6 pm to 9 pm at the funeral home.
Mr. Staggs, a veteran of World War II, served in the European Theatre and earned several medals for his service to his country, including the Bronze Star for bravery. A farmer and Genesco retiree, he was known by many friends, family, and business associates for his love of horses, mules, leather work and as a partner operating B & S Harness Shop for many years. He was a charter member of the Waynesboro Bridle and Saddle Club. In addition to his military service in World War II, Sgt. Staggs was discharged from the Confederate States of America, Captain James Coy Anderson Company of Nixon's 48th Tennessee Infantry Regiment of Volunteers. He was a member of Waynesboro Masonic Lodge No. 127 and Highland United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his bride of 63 years, Freddy June Bromley Staggs, Waynesboro, TN; three children, Teresa Gail Wilson and husband, Philip, Chapel Hill, TN; Myra Beth Staggs, Nashville, TN; Gerald Lee Staggs, Nashville, TN; two grandchildren, Michael Thomas Wilson and wife, Katy, Goodlettsville, TN and Ashlyn Lee Staggs, Waynesboro, TN. He is also survived by brothers, Mack and Lawrence Staggs; sisters, Sue Pope, Lois Crews, and Carol Thmpson all of Waynesboro, TN; Uncle and Aunt, Fred and Mary Gobbell and Aunt Ida Gobbell Pollock all of Lawrenceburg, TN; nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Marvin Staggs.
