Louise Hawkins

December 6, 1914 — March 12, 2013

Louise Lax Hawkins, 98, died peacefully Monday night, just past midnight, at the home of her God-daughter, Jessica Morris & husband Ron.

She was born in Middleburg, TN in 1914, to Joseph Brooks & Ada Haley Lax, next to the youngest of 11 the only girl. Her brothers were John Henry, Berryman Curtis, Joseph Lafayette, Berry, George Wood, William Haley, Fitz Simmons, James Ernest, Vernon T., & Benjamin David.

She leaves her niece, Bernice Maxwell Shackleford, only a few years younger, who came to live with her family when her mother died, and they grew up like sisters and Bernice’s family, Teresa Theiner & Jimmy Maxwell and more nieces, nephews, and cousins than can be listed in this space! Family was top priority for her; until recently, she could give the last 150+ years of her family history, including a grandfather who walked back from a Northern prison after the civil war!

She attended Lambuth College in the early 1930’s, where she played basketball, scoring 15 points in her first game! She then taught 4th grade in Grand Junction, TN and coached girls’ basketball for several years.

She married Wilbur Hawkins in 1940. During WW II, while he was in the army in the Pacific, she worked as a supervisor at Mallory Air Force Depot, and continued after the war until her retirement from Civil Service in 1972. They enjoyed golf and travel until his death in 1975, after which she returned to Memphis.

She loved family, friends, church, Middleburg Baptist as a child & First Baptist in Memphis after 1940, ballroom dancing, gardening, playing cards with her bridge buddies & good food; her last meal was corn soup & sweet potato pie! Above all, she loved children, everyone’s children!

She worked tirelessly for King’s Daughters & Sons Home in Memphis and taught children at church.

The family wishes to thank the family of loving caregivers who cared for her around the clock for several months: Vashti Cole, Loria Crawford, Jenett Crutcher, Diane Isom, Joann Lasane, Nailah Oyeleye, Japera Oyeleye, Georgia Scruggs, Mary Terrell, & Peggy Towner, as well as Julia Pekas, Rick McDade, Demetria Williams and the entire staff of Baptist Trinity Hospice, every last person!
