ELIZABETH DIANE “LUCY” GAFFNEY

Elizabeth Diane ‘Lucy’ Gaffney of Sweetlips, TN, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026 surrounded by her family at her daughter’s home in Jacks Creek, TN.

She was born on April 27, 1952, to the late Elmer Lee and Norma Jean Ray of Beech Bluff, TN. She attended Beech Bluff School and later graduated from South Side High School.

Lucy married the love of her life, George “Butch” Gaffney in 1970. They made their home in the Sweetlips Community throughout their marriage. Lucy spent most of her adult life caring for others as a nurse, which she was passionate about.

Butch and Lucy had two children, George Jr. and Sarah. Lucy was passionate about her family. She was especially fond of her grandson, Justin who was more like a son to her.

She is survived by her husband, George E. “Butch” Gaffney, her children George Gaffney Jr. and wife Kristy. Sarah Daniel and husband Jamie, her grandchildren, Justin Gaffney and partner, Karen, Megan Wheat and husband Patrick, Heather Gaffney and husband Manny, Jessica Strangfeld and husband Zack, three step grandchildren, Garrett and Riley Hathcock and Brooklyn Keats and Husband Tanner and her great grandchildren, Liam, Harlee, Eric, Ella, Parker, and Layne. A brother, Danny Ray and wife Barbra along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Norma Ray and her siblings, Steve Ray, Larry Ray and Doris Stanford.
