Mr. Taylor passed away Nov. 23 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital after suffering a stroke two days prior at his home.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Beulah Taylor; two daughters, Dolores Courage of Jackson, and Mary and husband Jack Cook of Sevierville; three grandchildren, Tracy Courage of Little Rock, Ark.; Joshua Maness of San Diego, and Amanda Sweat of Sevierville; a brother, James Taylor, and a sister, Virgie Dowdy, both of Jackson; and two great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by five sisters and one brother.
Mr. Taylor, born in 1918, grew up in rural Hardeman County. He farmed for a living and worked at the Bemis Cotton Mill. In 1944, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served nearly two years with the 223rd Ordnance Heavy Maintenance Company in the European Theatre. When he returned home in February 1946, he resumed his job at the mill and was promoted to a supervisory role. He worked there 40 years, retiring in 1982.
An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Taylor loved gardening and farmed well into his eighties. He was a talented carpenter and woodworker who enjoyed working in shop. He also loved gospel music and was a longtime member of Big Springs Methodist Church, where he served as church treasurer many years.
