Luzell Marshall Hughes

Mrs. Hughes was born June 5, 1930, in Hardin County, Tennessee, the daughter of the late Joseph and Reba Marshall. She was one of three children.

Mrs. Hughes was joined in marriage to her soulmate, E.J. Hughes on July 12, 1952. Their remarkable marriage spanned an incredible 63 years, until Mr. Hughes's death in 2015, and was marked by unwavering love and commitment to each other, as well as an enduring dedication to their community.

Mrs. Hughes, who earned her Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Tennessee Knoxville and her Masters in Education Administration from Memphis State University, dedicated her life to teaching. She spent 47 years nurturing future generations at Adamsville Elementary School in Adamsville, Tennessee, both as teacher and later principal where her passion for education and relentless support for children inspired many. She was also a member of the prestigious honor societies Kappa Delta Pi and Delta Kappa Gamma which recognize excellence in educators.

A faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Adamsville, Mrs. Hughes shared her faith and love for the Lord, fostering a spirit of service to her community. She was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter 330. Mrs. Hughes also enjoyed life with her husband and family. She enjoyed traveling, attending Broadway musicals and the Nashville Symphony, and playing bridge and canasta. In her later years, she enjoyed all the amenities of McKendree Village in Nashville, TN and the numerous activities and friendships she made there over her last 9 years.

She cared for all the staff at McKendree deeply as they did her.

Mrs. Luzell Marshall Hughes, a beloved member of her community, passed away peacefully in her beautiful home at McKendree on February, 2, 2025 in Nashville, TN.

Reflecting on Luzell Hughes's life, it is clear to see the indelible impression she left on the hearts of her family, friends, colleagues, and students. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Jane Littlefield Hughes of Franklin, Tennessee and her brother-in-law, Mgr. Billy Parker of Nashville.

She is also survived by her nieces: Carlyn Hughes, Debra H. Herrin (Mike), Anita H. French (Randell), Lisa H. Short, Shelia Brush Payne (Donnie), as well as by her nephews: Keith Hughes (Kathryn), David Hughes (Gina), Jeffrey Hughes (Neeka), Joey Parker (Ann Stevenson), and two great-nephews that meant the world to her: Stevenson Alan Parker and William Hughes Parker.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her two sisters, Jo Brush (Tom), Mary M. Parker and nephew Mike Hughes.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church in Adamsville or to the Patsy Cain Education Foundation Fund at Adamsville Elementary School.
