Marvin Williams, a dedicated basketball coach and passionate equestrian, passed away peacefully at his home in Whiteville, Tennessee on August 31, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on September 24, 1937, in Bolivar, Tennessee, Coach Williams shaped the lives of countless young athletes over his remarkable 31-year coaching career.

Coach Williams' journey in coaching began at Ramer, where he spent seven formative years that laid the groundwork for his illustrious career. He then made significant impacts at Austin Peay, Jackson, and Clarksville, ultimately spending his later years coaching in Bolivar. During his time at Bolivar Central High School, he led his teams to two state championships and established his reputation as an outstanding mentor, further guiding Jackson State Community College to another two state championships while securing a remarkable third-place finish nationally. His coaching record stood impressively at 1000 wins to 200 losses, with a tenure that saw his teams reach sub-state finals seven out of ten years. The extraordinary contributions to the sport earned him induction into five Basketball Hall of Fames, a testament to his legacy and commitment to excellence.

Beyond his achievements on the basketball court, Coach Williams was also known for his passion for raising, showing and breeding walking horses, showcasing a love for equestrian pursuits that paralleled his dedication to coaching.

He was a member of Parrans Chapel Baptist Church.

Marvin is survived by his devoted daughter, Whitney Bevels and her husband, Buddy of Whiteville; his son, Matthew Williams of Toone; his cherished grandchildren, Haley (Mark), Dylan, and Leslie; and his adored great-grandchildren, Lennon, Jack, and Alice. He also leaves behind nephews, Duncan, David and Steve and a niece, Emily, who will all remember him fondly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Atlas and Elizabeth Walton Williams; his daughter, Lori Williams Lax; and siblings, Duncan Williams and Margie Wooten.

Final services for Coach Marvin Williams will be held on September 9, 2025, with visitation at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Bolivar from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM. The family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate the life of a remarkable man who left an indelible mark on those he encountered.

A reception will be held following the interment at The Columns, 303 W. McNeal St., Bolivar, TN 38008.  All are invited to attend and share stories and memories of Coach Williams.
