Marvin York was born June 2, 1938 in McNairy County, TN the son of the late Thetus and Syler Reed York.
He was united in marriage to Nell Derryberry on November 19, 1959.
Mr. York graduated from Ramer High School in 1957. He worked as a telegraph operator on the Norfolk Southern Railway for 24 years, served as the Chewalla, TN Postmaster for 17 years, and operated York's Tax Service for over 30 years. Mr. York was the former Fire Chief for the Chewalla Volunteer Fire Department, and also served as a medical First Responder. He was recognized as the Emergency Service Worker of the Year for McNairy County in 2002. Mr. York was a faithful member of the Chewalla Baptist Church, and had formerly served as Church Treasurer. Some of his favorite hobbies included searching for Civil War relics and Indian artifacts, as well as playing softball with Chewalla Baptist Church.
Mr. York departed this life on March 13, 2013 in Chewalla, Tennessee at the age of 74 Years, 9 Months, 11 Days. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nell (Derryberry) York of Chewalla, TN; two daughters, Kristy Hopkins of Corinth, MS and Robin Gafford and husband Richard of Chewalla, TN; two sons, Jeff York and Mark York and wife Robin, all of Chewalla, TN; six grandchildren: Maegan Faulkner and husband Jeremiah, Lacey Hopkins, Adrianne Gafford, Austin Gafford, Victoria York, and Kyndle York; five great-grandchildren: Lexie Faulkner, Brantley Faulkner, Hallie Beth Faulkner, Brooklyn Hopkins, and Zaiden Chappell; three sisters: Peggy Baldwin of Chewalla, TN, Cathy Davis and husband Charlie of Salisaw, OK, and Sue Fiveash and husband Enoch of Chewalla, TN; two brothers, Bruce York and wife Patty and George York, all of Chewalla, TN; two sisters-in-law, Shelia York of Dyersburg, TN, Wanda York of Ramer; a host of nieces and nephews that he thought the world of; and many more extended family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Mr. York was preceded in death by a son, Paul York in 1987; three grandchildren: Allison Gafford, Kayla York, and Fulton York; two brothers, J. T. York and Travis York.
