Mary Ann "Nanny" Hurst, age 82, of Bethel Springs, Tennessee, passed peacefully from this life on January 28, 2026, surrounded by the love of a family she cherished deeply.
Mary Ann was born on June 13, 1943, in Bethel Springs, Tennessee, the daughter of the late A.D. McCann and Annie Katherine Shirley McCann. She was united in marriage to Harold David Hurst on December 16, 1960, sharing many years of love and devotion until his passing on February 21, 2006.
A woman of strong work ethic and many talents, Mary Ann was known as a dedicated seamstress and a hardworking businesswoman. She proudly owned and operated the Sunset Grill in Selmer and later served as manager of the Selmer Moose Lodge, where her leadership and friendly spirit left a lasting impression. No matter what the role, she poured her heart into everything she did.
More than anything else, Mary Ann treasured time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the joy of her life. She also adored her beloved dog, Princess Coco, and found comfort in quiet moments watching Hallmark movies and Gilmore Girls. She had a playful side too—loving a good game of Bunco—and was well known for her impressive collection of more than 2,000 cookie jars, each one a small reflection of her personality and charm.
She leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory: a daughter, Mary Katherine Williams and husband Danny Lee; a son, John David Hurst and wife Phyllis; two granddaughters, Mary Alisha Stavely and husband Christopher Terry, Alissa Nicole Wallis and husband Joe; twelve great-grandchildren, Sieanna, Gracelynn, Austin, Emmett, Mason, Brayden, Carsen, Jaxon, Aubree, Tyler, Bella, and Michael; and nephew and caregiver, James McNeil.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mary Ann was preceded in death by a son, Dwight David Hurst; three sisters, Shirley Smith, Betty McCann, and Jewel Keough; a brother, Vernon McCann; and a sister-in-law, Wanda McNeil.
Mary Ann Hurst will be remembered for her strength, her warmth, and the deep love she held for her family. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched and the generations who carry her spirit forward.
