She was born at Stantonville, TN and moved to Enville at age 14, the daughter of the late Dr. James Gilbert and Maggie Jones Howell. After high school at Morris Chapel she graduated Freed Hardeman and then received her BA Degree and teaching certificate from Union University in 1953. She also took classes at Memphis State University. She was married to John Aubrey ‘Jab’ Bishop in 1942. They made their home at Enville all their married life, where they farmed and Mr. Bishop worked for the Department of Agriculture. Mr. Bishop died in 1992.
Mrs. Bishop started her teaching career in the early 1930’s teaching at McCall School House with Junelle McCall and Tri County School at Milledgeville with Tom Armour and Enville with Lyman Goodwin, Lewis Jones, Mabel McAdams (Morgan) and Alma Young, teaching grades first through third.
She began teaching at Chester County High School in 1957 where she taught 9th grade English and later in her her career 10th grade English, under principals James Williams and John Graves. She retired in 1979 after having taught 43 1/2 years.
She was a member of the Enville United Methodist Church, a member of the Chester County Retired Teachers Association, the National Education Association and the Tennessee Education Association.
She was a member of the Order of The Eastern Star and the American Legion Ladies Auxillary, the VFW Auxiliary and the Chester County Historical Society.
She is survived by a son John Michael “Mike†Bishop and wife Karen of Henderson and two grandchildren John Jarrett Bishop and Dannon Michael Bishop and wife Teresa all of Enville and three great grandchildren.
