Mary Sykes Howell, 90, of Middleton, died Friday morning, August 12, 2011 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
Born November 8, 1920 to John Thomas and Tullie Ola Duncan Sykes, she lived her entire life in Hardeman County as a homemaker. She loved to quilt and sew, read, work Bible crossword puzzles and was a history buff. Many knew her as "Monk" and she loved to visit and talk with her friends and family. She was married 60 years to Rev. Sam Howell who died April 13, 2003 and was a member of Hebron Baptist Church.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Janice (Wayne) Berryman of Bolivar, and Marilyn (Butch) Marcum of Middleton; 2 sisters Sue Russell and Margie Maxwell both of Bolivar; 4 brothers, Joe Sykes of York, PA, Gerald Sykes of Bolivar, Howard Sykes of Newnan, GA and Bob Sykes of Athens, TN; 6 grandchildren, Connie Murphy, Kevin Marcum, Stacey Riffle, Crystal Anderson, Kelly and Carman Berryman; and 9 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents she was preceeded in death by 3 brothers, Thomas B., Bill, and Ed Sykes and 2 sisters, Eugenia Bryant, and Annie Ruth Baker, and a son, John W. Howell..
