Katherine Alley Patterson Pleasant, affectionately known as “Mother” by so many, was born February 21, 1926 in Wayne County and grew up in Clifton, TN. The daughter of Oliver Earl and Myrtle Moore Alley. On November 2, 1946, she was united in marriage to Byron Patterson, Jr. They made their home in Olivehill and Savannah,TN until his death in 1963. She later married Opal Pleasant on February 5, 1971. They moved to Tuscaloosa, AL. After retirement, they moved back home to Savannah, TN.
Katherine graduated from Frank Hughes High School in Clifton, TN. In her early years she worked at Brown Shoe Company on the production line and in the office. She fondly described her coworkers at Brown Shoe as a big family. She then worked at the cable office in Savannah and in department stores in the mall while living in Tuscaloosa. While living in Tuscaloosa, she also volunteered and was active in Zeta Tau Alpha. After retirement, she took great pride in volunteering at Hardin Medical Center as a Pink Lady and met many wonderful people there.
She is survived by her devoted daughter, Kathy Patterson Petty. Grandchildren Mitzi Knight (Nick), Tandi Tilson (Shane), Traci Melson (Jimmie), Chipp Petty (Tabitha), and Marci Petty. Great grandchildren, Cade Knight, Sarah Katherine Tilson, Matti Tilson, Aidan Melson (Kaylie), Langdan Melson, Rylan Melson, Marianna Melson, Maddan Melson, Milo Petty, Covey Petty, and Livi Petty. Mother was also excitedly expecting a great, great grandson, Banks Melson in October. She was also survived by one brother, J.W. Alley of Linden, TN; and special nieces, Sheri Riddell of Nashville and Shannon Riddell of Savannah.
She was preceded in death by both of her husbands, grandchild Reece Knight, son in law, Danny Petty, Siblings Margaret Wheat, Sue Alley, Mary Ann Riddell, Oliver Earl Alley, Jr, and Charles Alley.
Mother always said that she was fortunate enough to have two wonderful husbands in her lifetime. Her greatest joy was spending time with her friends and family, especially spoiling her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed shopping, especially for shoes and purses; watching Atlanta Braves baseball and Alabama football, and traveling with Opal all over the state of Alabama for his work. She was the true definition of strength, resilience, class, and sophistication, and took great pride in her appearance, always having her nails painted and makeup applied. She lived through the Great Depression, a world war, the loss of two husbands and many other family members and friends.
She leaves behind a legacy of love grace and will be sorely missed by those who knew her.
A special thank you to Arden Hospice (especially Kara and Tina), and Park Rest Nursing Home for providing Mother with exceptional care.
