MAX E. MASSENGILL
Enville, TN: Max Edward Massengill, age 86, passed away Friday evening July 17, 2015 at the emergency room of Jackson Madison County General Hospital after having suffered a stroke earlier in the day at the Chester County Senior Citizens Center.
He was born April 26, 1929 and reared in the Sweetlips Community and Enville Community of Chester County, the son of the late David Washington and Mary Elizabeth Henderson Massengill. He attended Chester County Schools. He served for four years in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 until 1952 serving during the Korean Conflict. He was married to Novelee James in 1953. He was a Baptist in belief.
Mr. Massengill began working for the Tennessee Highway Patrol January 1, 1955, working most of his career in the driver’s license department, retiring in 1980. He then drove a school bus for Chester County for nineteen years, retiring in 2000. He served one term as Mayor of Enville and served on the Chester County Court as a Commissioner for twelve years, 1986 until 1998.
He is survived by his wife, Novelee James Massengill of Enville; a daughter, Janice Lee Massengill Strickland of Pinson; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; three brothers, William D. Massengill of Ripley, Troy D. Massengill of Adamsville, and John S. Massengill of Memphis and four sisters, Maerene Barker of Savannah, Mary Etta Duke of Morris Chapel, Nannie Nixon of Enville and Joy Grisham of Jackson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Johnny Ray Massengill in 2002; two brothers, Joseph Massengill and Paul Ray Massengill and two sisters, Mildred I. Smith and Naomi Grimes.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Tuesday July 21, 2015 at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel with Bro. Don Lipford officiating and burial will follow in Chester County Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Casey Chapel 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Monday.
