Milton Ray Basden

Mr. Milton Ray Basden, age 87, of Bolivar, departed this life Monday, October 8, 2012 at the West Tennessee State Veterans' Home in Humboldt, TN.
He was born July 30, 1925 in Blue Springs, Mississippi to the late James Edward and Myrtle Purvis Basden and served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theatre during World War II from 1943 to 1946. On June 17, 1951, he was united in marriage to Ann Bringle who preceded him in death October 28, 2010.
He was a graduate of Sherman High School in Sherman, Mississippi; he went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree from Union University, where he played baseball and basketball and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He received his Masters of Education from Peabody College for Teachers, and completed graduate work at the University of Memphis.
Mr. Basden was employed by the Hardeman County Board of Education, serving as Principal and Coach at Whiteville High School from 1950 to 1956 and Principal of Bolivar Central High School from 1956 until his retirement in 1983. He served on the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Accreditation Board, and it was during his tenure that BCHS was accredited by the organization. He also helped other schools achieve excellence as the Tennessee Representative for the SACS. He served on the TSSAA Legislative Council from 1979 to 1983 and in 1991 was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame.
In addition to furthering excellence in education and athletics, Mr. Basden was also very involved in his community. He was elected to the Bolivar City Council and as the Chairman of the Board of Bolivar Energy Authority in 1985 and retired from both positions in 2009. He was a charter member of the Bolivar Civitan Club, was active in Loaves and Fishes, and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bolivar, where he served as a Deacon and Chairman of Deacons.
Especially to his friends, Mr. Basden was considered a public servant who gave unselfishly of his time to charitable organizations as well as a renowned educator and skilled chef. He was also formally recognized and honored by the Mayor and Bolivar City Council for his dedication to the citizens of Bolivar and Hardeman County.
Survivors include a daughter, Paula Basden of Jackson and a son, Edward Basden of Norcross, Georgia. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.
