NELLIE BESS SUMMERS ARMOUR
Henderson, TN: Nellie Bess Summers Armour, age 102 passed away December 23, 2015 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital.
Mrs. Armour was born January 26, 1913 in Abilene, TX and moved to Tennessee at an early age. She was the daughter of the late Isaac Lafayette and Estelle Reed Summers. She was educated in Chester County Public Schools. She graduated from Chester County High School, and attended Union University. She is a graduate of Freed-Hardeman University and of Memphis State University where she received a B. S. Degree in Elementary Education.
Mrs. Amour retired in 1976 after serving forty years in the Chester County School System. She held membership in the Chester County Teachers Association, Tennessee Education Association, and the National Education Association. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the Chester County Retired Teachers Association, and the Bon Tres Club. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church, and the Order of the Eastern Star.
In 1941, she was married to Thomas B. Armour who preceded her in death in 1994. Mr. Armour served as Superintendent of the Chester County School System for many years.
Mrs. Armour is survived by several nieces and nephews; John Summers, Betty Mann, Charles Rhodes, Gerald Stanfill, Joe Ramon Stanfill, Peggy Stanfill, Sarah Estelle Berkel, Anna Cleveland, and Judith Summers, special friends Mr. and Mrs. Odell Hatch and caregivers; Regina Cupples, Mary Jane Harris, Judy Foster, Jinger Hall, Lillie Terry, Diane Jones, and Myrna Stanfill.
She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters; John Lloyd Summers, Annie Summers, Bonnie Lee Summers Rhodes, Lucille Summers, Janice Summers Stanfill, Bynum Reed Summers, and two infant sisters, and a niece and two nephews, Theo Rhodes, Doris Rhodes Thomas, and Joe Summers.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday December 28, 2015 at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel with Bro. Stan Smith officiating and burial will follow in Henderson City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Shackelford – Casey Chapel from 5 pm until 7 pm Sunday.
