Ovid D. Thompson

was born in Cordele, Georgia on September 9, 1931 the son of the late Sanders Charles and Mary Claire Thompson.

On January 28, 1973 he was united in marriage to Juanita Mabry, who survives.

Master Sergeant Thompson served 30 devoted years in the United States Army. He received the following honors: Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Presidential Unit Citation (Republic of Korea), Overseas Service Bars (4), Two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal (3rd Oak Leaf Cluster), Combat Infantryman Badge, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Campaign Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (Numeral 2) and the Good Conduct Medal (8th Award). He was also a member of the ACCA Temple Shrine of Richmond, Virginia, Shriners Fort Knox, Kentucky and Pickwick Shrine Club of Hardin and McNairy Counties. He proudly served the Shriners in the United States as well as Europe. He was a Shriner clown and was active in their annual Hospital Benefit Drive raising funds for the Shriner's Hospital for Children.

Mr. Thompson departed this life on May 12, 2016 at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia at the age of 84 years, 8 months and 3 days.

In addition to his wife, Juanita, he is survived by one stepdaughter, Patsy K. Bragg and her husband Donald; one step granddaughter, Erin Michelle Bragg; one brother, Russell Rivers Thompson and his wife Dianne and one sister in law, Mary Thompson.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Thompson was also preceded in death by two sisters, Doris Marie Chenault and her husband William and Jeanette Jean Thompson and one brother, Sanders Charles Thompson, Jr.

The Thompson family would like to thank everyone for their help and support over the years.

Visitation will be Sunday, May 22, from 12 PM until 3 PM at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Savannah with funeral services beginning at 3PM. Burial will follow in the Savannah Cemetery Savannah, Tennessee.

Due to Mr. Thompson's love for animals, memorial donations are requested to be made to Hardin County Animal Services, 140 Legion Drive, Savannah, TN 38372.
