Obituary

Palace Elmore Wilson, a proud Navy veteran, devoted husband, loving father, and hard-working family man, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2026, at the age of 93. Born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, on November 2, 1932, he was the cherished son of the late Alvie A. Wilson and Mae Evelyn Dover Wilson.

Palace honorably served his country in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955, stationed aboard the battleship USS Iowa. Following his military service, he married the love of his life, Mary Frances Smallwood, on November 27, 1957. Together, they built a life centered on faith, devotion, and shared joy until her passing on March 14, 2015.

Palace dedicated his career to the Illinois Central Railroad, retiring after many years of faithful service as a Switchman and Yardmaster. In retirement, he and Mary cherished their time together on the water crappie fishing. They would spend whole days on the lake, returning home to cook up their catch and enjoy a feast—affectionately referring to every one of these fishing trips as their own special "vacation." Known fondly by several names, many called him "P.E.," while others lovingly knew him as Uncle "Mo" because it was easier to say than Elmore.

Palace was preceded in death by his parents, Alvie and Mae Wilson; his beloved wife, Mary Frances Wilson; his sisters, Clara Hand and Flora Churchwell; and his brother, Thomas Wilson.

His memory and legacy live on through those who survive him: his son, Mark Wilson of Millington, TN; his brother, Douglas Wilson of Marked Tree, AR; his sister, Joyce Moser of Bartlett, TN; his brother, Johnny Wilson of Marion, AR; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

"Fair winds and following seas."
