Obituary

Funeral services for Peggy Mitchell Benson, of Pinson, will be Wednesday April 1, 2026 at 2pm, at Shackelford Funeral Home (Casey Chapel) in Henderson, with burial to follow at Big Springs United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8pm on Tuesday March 31 and from 12 to 2pm before the funeral.

Peggy Annah Mitchell was born on June 2, 1939, to the late Clifford Leroy and Flora Annah Morris Mitchell and passed peacefully on March 27, 2026. Raised primarily in Haywood and Crockett counties, she moved to Bemis, Tennessee as a girl. She attended both J.B. Young and South Side High School before meeting and marrying Robert “Doomer” Benson on July 5, 1957, when she moved to Pinson to make their home and raise her family, a job from which she never retired.

Peggy was preceded in death by her brothers Roy Neal, Danny Arthur, and Roger Dale Mitchell and her beloved sister Rosa Lee Mitchell Warren

She is survived by her best friend and faithful husband of 68 years, Doomer Benson, and her son Randy and wife Kim Benson of Woodville, TN. She’s also survived by her grandchildren Ryan and Lori Benson of Pinson, Reid Benson of Nashville, and Conlee Benson (Tyler Youmans) of Jackson, as well as brother Joe Mitchell (Cynthia) of Jackson and granddaughter-in-love Allison Rundlett (West) of Memphis.

She was an avid birdwatcher and looked forward to the arrival of her hummingbirds every Spring. She loved sunsets, NASCAR and tending to her many flower beds. A natural born nurturer, she was known throughout her community for her green thumb and her annual summer garden. She was a faithful friend to many and a devoted member of Pinson United Methodist Church, but as Nana-in-Chief, in her eyes, her family is her legacy. In addition to her son and grandchildren, she is survived by her beloved great-grandchildren: Luke and Ty Benson, Emery Youmans, and Nyla and Ivy Rundlett.

Peggy’s family wishes to give special thanks to caregivers Sheila Mosley, Valerie Ingram, Vivian Drain and Patti Duke, as well as the staff at Arbors of Dogwood Pointe in Milan. In lieu of flowers, Peggy requested donations be made to her two favorite children’s charities, St. Jude Research Hospital and the Shriners Hospital.
