Peggy Hosea Pitts was born on March 23, 1930, in Hardin County, Tennessee, the daughter of the late John Wesley and Rosa Copeland Hosea. She grew up in the Campground Community and attended elementary school at Campground.
On December 24, 1953, she was united in marriage to Jack Wright Pitts from Cerro Gordo. They were married in Corinth, Mississippi. Jack preceded his wife in death on July 2, 2009.
Peggy was a 1948 graduate of Central High School in Savannah, Tennessee, where she was a member of The High Ten of her class. After high school she worked at the Savannah Button Factory, Brown Shoe Company, and Hughes Worm Ranch. In 1965, she received her Nursing Degree from Crump Vocational Technical School and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She would go on to work as a nurse for Hardin County Hospital for 12 years and later work at Hardin Home Nursing Home until her retirement in 1995 as the Director of Nurses. Working as a nurse brought her a tremendous sense of satisfaction.
Mrs. Pitts was an avid reader and especially enjoyed Harlequin Romances and other historical books and the classics. She was also a Bible scholar. She read the Bible through several times. She was a true animal lover with a special love for dogs. Another one of her interests was that Peggy loved to quilt and would make quilts sometimes from original patterns she had created, piecing them together and quilting them by hand. She also loved to spend time in her yard and garden tending to her flowers. She had a lovely singing voice and was an excellent alto and soprano. She also loved corresponding with her beloved pen pal, Ailene Richardson, who lived in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Peggy began writing to Ailene at the age of 16 and they continued corresponding until Ailene passed away in her 90’s. Peggy was a member of both Campground Methodist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church over her lifetime.
