Ray "Ray Dean" Earnest

Ray "Ray Dean" Earnest, a cherished member of the community, passed away on February 16, 2026, in Bolivar, Tennessee. Born on March 12, 1940, in Memphis, Tennessee, Ray dedicated his life to family and work, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and love.

For over 50 years, Ray was a passionate heavy equipment operator and the proud owner of Ray's Backhoe Service. His expertise and dedication to his craft earned him respect and admiration from colleagues and clients alike. Ray was known for enjoying every moment spent running heavy equipment, and he had a keen interest in antiques and anything related to his work.

A lifelong resident of Hardeman County, Ray was deeply rooted in his community. His faith as a Baptist served as a guiding light throughout his life. He was an avid sports fan, with a particular love for the St. Louis Cardinals and University of Tennessee football and basketball teams; these interests reflected his vibrant personality and his commitment to enjoying life.

Ray is survived by his loving family: his son Hunter Earnest and Amy of Mt. Juliet, TN; his brother Joe Earnest of Hickory Valley; his sister Eva Grace Atkeison of Somerville; his stepson Brandon Plunk; and his beloved grandchildren William Kyle Earnest, Hannah Rose Earnest, Hallie Elizabeth Earnest, and Karlee Plunk, as well as a great-grandchild, William Landry Earnest.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Malvin Hunter Earnest and Pearl Irwin Earnest, as well as his brothers Hunter Earnest, Jr. and James Wiley Earnest.

A visitation to celebrate Ray's life is scheduled for February 19, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Bolivar. This will be followed by a graveside service at Woods Cemetery in Hickory Valley, starting at 2:00 PM.

Ray "Ray Dean" Earnest will be deeply missed by his family and friends, who are grateful for the many memories shared and the love he imparted during his lifetime. His passion for life, dedication to his work, and unwavering love for his family will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.  Memorials in his name may be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (www.stjude.org/donate).
