ROBERT ‘BOB’ DAY
Henderson, TN: Robert Shannon Day age 83, passed away December 10, 2023, at Cordova Wellness & Rehabilitation in Memphis, TN.
Bob was born in Tampa, FL, the son Everett Clarence Day Sr. and Julia Shannon Day. He was the son of a preacher and lived all over Mississippi, including Fulton, New Albany, Corinth, and Water Valley, where he graduated from high school in 1958. He attended Freed Hardeman College for two years and then transferred to the University of Mississippi. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 1963. He served two years and was stationed in Muenchweiler, Germany for sixteen months, serving as a medic and ambulance driver. Bob began his thirty-six-year career in telecommunications working for Western Electric in 1965. Over the years, Western Electric evolved into Lucent Technologies, where Bob continued to work in Memphis, New York, and New Jersey until he retired in 2001.
Over the course of his life, Bob was involved in the Church of Christ wherever he lived. When Bob lived in the northeast, he worked diligently with small churches in the area, giving of his time, Biblical knowledge, and resources. Anyone who knew Bob knew of his generosity and gentle spirit. Always willing to lend a hand, he loved helping others and was willing to do so at a moment’s notice. His most recent membership was with the Henderson Church of Christ.
Bob married Bobbie Carol Wade on October 10, 1969. They were married nineteen years and shared two children and six grandchildren.
Bob had many important roles in his 83 years on this Earth: son, brother, husband, father, and friend. It is safe to say that his favorite role was that of “Papaw.” Nothing delighted him more than his six grandchildren. Their ages ranging from 30 years to 7 years, the joy that these children brought to Papaw Day and the joy he inspired in them will stay with them forever. He played, encouraged, listened, laughed, joked, and was generally silly with them. For that, they love him and will cherish those memories always. Bob also loved was to praise Jesus in song. He enjoyed singing in a barber shop group with his brother Everett Jr. and a few of their friends. At every family reunion, he and his siblings would sing together in a harmony that could bring tears to your eyes. Even in his last days, he would hum along to the a capella hymns that played at his bedside. It is a great comfort for those of us left behind that he has joined with his parents and siblings gone before to make a joyful noise.
Bob is survived by a daughter, Emily Day Kearney (Richard) of Memphis; a son, Stephen Shannon Day (Maggie) of Memphis; and six grandchildren, Aubrey Kearney (Matthew McConahay), Reghan Kearney, Owen Kearney, Ellsie Day, Elian Day, and Elora Day. Bob was happy to hear recently that he was also expecting his first great-grandchild. Bob is also survived by a beloved sister, Patsy Ainsworth of Bedford, TX along with a host of nieces and nephews that he loved and that loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Eugene Day, Billy Day, and Everett Day, Jr.; and his sister, Miriam Holcomb.
