Robert Lee Gray

August 26, 1947 — December 12, 2025

Savannah

Robert Lee Gray was born in Savannah, Tennessee on August 26, 1947, the son of the late Gilbert and Ruby Ferrell Gray.

In November of 1968 he was united in marriage to Peggy Merinda Dockery, who survives.

Robert served his country proudly in the United States Army Military Police. He served from 1966 to 1968 and in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. Robert lived in Savannah for his whole life, but worked around the United States on construction projects for companies including Preston Carroll Construction, Insituform, and Advanced Underground Imaging (AUI). He spent 6 years working in Cairo and Suez Egypt for Harbert-Jones Construction and Dillingham Construction. Robert was a member of the American Legion and the International Union of Operating Engineers.

He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing on his beloved Tennessee River, watching the Tennessee Volunteers play sports, watching Alabama and Florida lose on every occasion, and watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball games win or lose. He especially enjoyed spending time on Norris Lake with his family in East Tennessee, as well as spending time cooking and entertaining at Horse Creek Landing with his friends and neighbors there. He dearly enjoyed spending time in the company of his pets, including at least two Labrador Retrievers named Sam.

He departed this life on Friday, December 12, 2025, in Savannah, Tennessee at the age of 78 years, 3 months, and 16 days.

In addition to his wife of 57 years, Peggy of Savannah, Tennessee, Robert is survived by his son, Robert Gray, II; and sisters, Betty (Gray) Perry and Bonnie (Gray) Walker.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Ruby Gray, and two brothers, Joe and Donnie Gray.
