Robert Clay Johnston

Robert Clay Johnston, Jr., age 81, of Clifton, TN died on Saturday, December 2, 2017, after suffering a massive stroke. He was the son of the late Robert Clay Johnston, Sr. and Mabel Ellen Keeton Johnston.
Robert lived in Clifton, TN from age 18 months when his mother died and he and his sister came to live with grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. J. T. Keeton. He attended Frank Hughes elementary school and graduated in 1954 from Central High School in Savannah, TN. He graduated from Memphis State University in 1958. He served his country in the United States Army from 1959 to 1961. Upon leaving the military, he taught at North Elementary School in Savannah, TN.
He spent many of his working years with the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN. When he retired from UT, he returned to Wayne County and bought and operated Johnston Building Supply. After retiring, he returned to his beloved Clifton.
He married Wanda Gant in 1961. They were blessed with two daughters, Janet Smith, deceased and Loyce Anne Kelly.
He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-six years, Wanda Johnston of Clifton, TN and a daughter, Loyce Anne Kelly and husband, Scott of Waynesboro, TN; granddaughters, Kaitlyn Kelly of Nashville, TN and Heather Long and husband, Phillip of Clifton, TN; two grandsons, Keeton Kelly of Waynesboro, TN and Andrew Smith of Clifton, TN; three great-grandchildren, Macaden Hunt and Micah and Matty Long; a sister, Johnnie Morgan and husband, David of Lutts, TN; a niece, Lisa Reitz of Florida and a nephew, John Morgan of North Carolina.
Robert was active in the First United Methodist Church, Waynesboro, TN, the Clifton Masonic Lodge, the Al Menah Temple Shriners and various local clubs.
He will be missed by his many friends and loved ones.
Services will be Monday, December 4, 2017 at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church, Waynesboro, Tennessee, with Kevin Marston, Bob Hargrove and Jeff Tilley officiating. Burial will follow in the Clifton Cemetery, Clifton, Tennessee with Shackelford Funeral Directors, Wayne County, directing.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 3, 2017 from 5 pm to 8 pm at First United Methodist Church, 311 Hassell St., Waynesboro, TN.
