He was born and reared in Chester County, near Milledgeville, the son of the late Robert and Effie Kelley Davis. He attended school at Milledgeville and overseas and after the service went to Memphis State. He entered the U.S. Army in 1944 and served with the 7th Infantry Division at Okinawa during which time the atomic bomb was dropped. He then served with the Occupational Army in South Korea. His unit took the Japanese Flag down and raised the American Flag in South Korea as the Occupational Army. He returned to the States and was discharged in November 1946.
He married Betty Evans in 1965. Mr. Davis farmed for a few years in the early 50’s. He went to work with the Memphis Police Department in November 1959 and worked there 35 years and retired in 1994 as a Captain and the next day began work for the State Attorney General’s Office as a Criminal Investigator and retired after 12 years, on March 17, 2007. He was a member of the Faith Baptist Church at Bartlett.
Mr. Davis had a role as a deputy sheriff in the first Walking Tall Movie with Joe Don Baker.
Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Evans Davis of Lakeland; two sons, Richard Alan Davis and wife Renee of Collierville and John Raymond Davis and wife Kim of Lakeland; three grandchildren, Hannah Grace Davis, Rachel Reese Davis and Olivia Rae Davis and two sisters, Ruby Lee Snider of Tupelo, MS and Ruth Marie Rainey of Enville.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert E. Davis and Royce Edward (Pete) Davis.
