Russell Anthony
Ray
Oct 19, 1941 — Aug 19, 2026
Russell Ray was born October 19, 1941, in Bethel Springs, Tennessee, the son of the late Romas and Christine Russom Ray. From an early age, Russell learned the value of hard work, a quality that remained with him throughout his life and helped shape the man he became.
On June 17, 1962, Russell was united in marriage to Viola Jenell Cates. Together, they shared a life centered around family, love, and devotion to one another. Russell took great pride in providing for his family and making sure those closest to him were cared for. Viola preceded him in death on August 15, 2022.
Russell spent 30 years working for Wonder Bread before retiring. He was a dependable man who took pride in his work and in providing for his family. Retirement did not slow him down, as he enjoyed working in his yard and keeping things neat and well cared for. He was happiest when he had something to do and could take pride in the results.
A lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan, Russell enjoyed following his favorite team through the years. He also loved to travel, with Cades Cove and the Great Smoky Mountains among his favorite destinations. He especially enjoyed traveling to South Dakota to watch the annual Buffalo Roundup, an experience that gave him memories he treasured.
While Russell enjoyed his work, his yard, baseball, and traveling, it was the simple pleasures of life that brought him the most contentment. He appreciated good days, familiar places, and the opportunity to make memories along the way. Those who knew him will remember him as a steady, hardworking man who took care of what was entrusted to him and lived life in his own quiet way.
Mr. Ray departed this life on August 19, 2026, in Selmer, Tennessee, at the age of 84 Years, 10 Months. He is survived by his daughter, Carol Dennison of Jackson, Tennessee; a sister, Janice Chester and husband, Robby; sisters-in-law, Annie Jane Ray and Myrtle Ray; two grandchildren, Melanie Oliver and husband, Scott, and Laura Bartos and husband, Titus; and several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Ray was preceded in death by his son, David Andrew Ray; son-in-law, Robert Glenn Dennison; great-grandson, Tyler Oliver; and two brothers, Roy Roger Ray and Richard Neal Ray.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Lynnfield Place and Legacy Hospice in Selmer for the compassionate care, kindness, and support they provided to Russell and his family.
Russell leaves behind a life marked by hard work, quiet devotion, and the memories he made along the way. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will remain in the stories shared, the places he loved, and the family who carries his life and legacy forward.
