Mr. Russell Lanell Tate, affectionately known as “Tateman,” age 77, departed this life on April 14, 2026, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
Russell was born on July 23, 1948, in Savannah, to the late Louie Tate Sr. and Maggie Turnipseed Tate. He was educated in the Hardin County School System and attended the historic Dunbar High School and Central High School, graduating in 1966.
Russell dedicated many years of service in janitorial work at Savannah Nursing & Rehabilitation, where he was known for his strong work ethic and reliability. He retired in 2010, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and quiet dedication.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Louie Tate Sr. and Maggie Turnipseed Tate; his brother, Abraham Lincoln Tate; his sister, Linda Tate Burns; one adopted brother, Rev. Grady Nixon; and his god-brother, Luster Hubbard.
He leaves to cherish his memory his youngest brother, Louie Tate Jr. (Virgia) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; his brother-in-law, Harold Burns of Savannah, Tennessee; and a host of nieces and nephews, who all held a special place in his heart as more like his children.
Russell found joy in the simple things in life. He loved gardening, where he found peace in nurturing the earth, and grilling, often bringing family and friends together over good food. He enjoyed attending bingo nights, socializing, and spending time with loved ones. He also enjoyed watching television, especially basketball, football, and classic country westerns like Gunsmoke.
Russell will be remembered for his laid-back spirit, his love for fellowship, and the comfort of his presence. He had a way of making those around him feel at ease, whether through conversation, laughter, or simply being there. His life was a reflection of kindness, simplicity, and genuine connection.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association.
