Sandra (Sandy) Maffett Sanders, age 70, of Hornsby, departed this life Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Bolivar General Hospital.
The widow of Billy Joe Sanders, who died on November 20, 2008, after almost 36 years of marriage, she retired in December 2008 from teaching in the Hardeman County school system for over 35 years, the last 29 of which she was a special education supervisor. She was born September 25, 1946, in Tupelo, MS, the daughter of James Maffett of Pontotoc, MS and the late Margaret Gwen Westbrook Maffett and grew up in Pontotoc, graduating from Pontotoc High School. She graduated from the University of Mississippi in the late 1960's and moved to Hardeman County in 1969 . Mrs. Sanders was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and enjoyed running/walking 5K's for pancreatic cancer research. In the last year, she was a sales consultant for NORWEX, promoting all natural products and healthy lifestyle tips. She enjoyed doing yoga and working out and gardening, but her greatest joy came from being around her family and her grandchildren, whom she dearly loved. She was a member of Hornsby Baptist Church where she was involved with various activities, including the 5K for Christ every year.
Survivors include four daughters, Barbara Reszel (Jim) of Camden, Carrie Lovelace, Rachel Ross (Will) and Becky Stanton (Wesley) all of Hornsby; four sons, Steve Sanders (Courtney) of Doniphan, MO, Joey Sanders of Camden, Doug McFarland (Debroah) of Jackson and Ben Sanders (Carrie) of Hornsby; her father, James Maffett, Jr. of Pontotoc, MS; two sisters, Beverly Gunter (Jim) and Kim Russell (Kelly) all of Pontotoc, MS; a brother, Harper "Hoppy" Maffett (Patsy) of Pontotoc, MS; 12 grandchildren and 'one on the way' and 4 great grandchildren.
