Sara Richardson Witherspoon, formerly of Grand Junction, TN and Goodlettsville, TN died in Murfreesboro, TN at The Health Center of Adams Place on Monday, September 28, 2015.
Mrs. Witherspoon was born in LaGrange, TN on January 21, 1922, spent her childhood in Grand Junction, and was salutatorian of the 1940 Grand Junction High School class. After graduating from Virginia Intermont College, George Peabody College for Teachers, and Memphis State University, she began her teaching career in Kentucky and later taught in elementary schools in Toone, Bolivar, and Goodlettsville. She married Carl Witherspoon, also of Grand Junction, in January, 1946 after he returned home from the War.
A devoted wife, mother, daughter, and teacher, she found a loving church family with St. Luke Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Oneida Cogbill and Hugh Hill Richardson, and by her husband of 60 years.
Survivors include a son, Bill (Sandy) Witherspoon, Ft. Mill, SC; daughters, Neida (Bill) Thompson, Crossville, TN, and Rachel Low, Lebanon, TN; her grandchildren, Renee (James) Ginn, Waxhaw NC, Shara (Tim) Clark, Ft. Mill, SC, Joshua Low, Washington, D.C., and Amy (Andrew) Williams, Chattanooga, TN; five great-grandchildren; and her brother, Hill (Mary) Richardson, Ft. Myers, FL.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 3, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Grand Junction Cemetery.
