Sara Mathis Steiner passed away Wednesday, September 10th, 2025 at Stoneridge of Farmington. She was born on September 18th, 1939, to Sallye Coleman Hughes and James Cliff Hughes of Kossuth, MS. She also had a younger brother, James “Jimmy” Cliff Hughes, Jr.
She was a graduate and valedictorian of Kossuth High School and a graduate of Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus, MS. Later, she obtained her Masters Degree in Special Education and English. She was a teacher at the high-school and college levels for 25 years, introducing all of us to diagramming sentences and perfect paragraphs. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Corinth.
Sara had a god-given talent for singing and playing the piano, captivating many with her beautiful, unique sound. Her talent could not be replicated. She married Joe Loyd Mathis, and they had two children, Lori Mathis Hill and Pat Mathis. She had two grandchildren, Dustin Null and Josiah Mathis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Loyd, her parents, Cliff and Sallye Hughes, and her brother, Jimmy. Sara is survived by her daughter, Lori (Chris Hill), her son, Pat, and her two grandchildren, Dustin and Josiah.
Services will be Friday, September 12th, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Corinth, with eulogy by Bro. Nathan Van Horn and Bro. Johnny Hancock. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until service time.
Pall Bearers will be Phillip Mathis, Mike Mattox, Randy Holt, Chris Hill, Dustin Null, and Josiah Mathis.
