Staff Sgt. (R) James Lewis Smith, Jr. of Hickory Valley departed this life at the age of 66 years, 7 months and 13 days Tuesday morning, February 19, 2013 at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis.
Mr. Smith was born July 6, 1946 to the late James Lewis, Sr. and Thelma Lavinia Shearin Smith and lived his entire life in Hardeman County. A 1964 graduate of Grand Junction High School, he served in the United States Army and was in Vietnam from May 1968-March 1969 in D Company 3/12th 4th I. Div., earning two Purple Hearts, a CIB-Combat Infantryman Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He retired as a Staff Sergeant. On July 14, 1990, he was united in marriage to Jacquelyn Simpson Smith, who survives. He enjoyed farming and spending time with his grandchildren and was a member of West Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Zondra Smith Scott and husband Steve of Lexington; two step-daughters, Christy Thrasher Delashmit and husband Scottie of Munford and Cynthia Dickerson and husband Jamie of Bolivar; a son, SFC Jimmy L. Smith and wife Jenny of Henderson; two sisters, Shirley Vincent of Hickory Valley and Linda Smith of Hickory Valley; a brother, Lawrence Smith and wife Cindy of Hickory Valley; seven grandchildren, Brittany and Jace Scott, Christopher and Daniel Delashmit, Sarah Dickerson and Mackenzie and Kacey Smith; and several nieces and nephews.
